Russia Pounds Ukraine With 700+ Drones and Missiles—At Least 16 Killed, Dozens Wounded

Russia launched one of its largest coordinated air assaults against Ukraine in recent months, firing more than 700 missiles and drones in 24 hours, striking dozens of locations and causing civilian casualties across multiple cities—with Kyiv bearing the heaviest damage.

Between 7:00 am on April 15 and 7:00 am on April 16, Russian forces launched a total of 703 aerial targets, including 44 missiles and 659 drones, according to the Ukrainian Air Forces on April 16.

Ukrainian air defenses reported intercepting or suppressing 667 of them, including most cruise missiles and a significant portion of ballistic threats.

Despite this, confirmed impacts were recorded at 26 locations, with debris falling in at least 25 additional areas.

Kyiv—the most damage and casualities

Kyiv suffered some of the most severe consequences of the attack, with four people killed, including a 12-year-old child, and 58 others injured, according to the Kyiv Region Prosecutors’ Office.

The strikes damaged at least 17 multi-story residential buildings and 10 private homes, along with civilian infrastructure, including a hotel, office center, car dealership, gas station, and shopping mall.

The hardest-hit areas were the Podilskyi and Obolonskyi districts.

In Obolonskyi, two people were killed, and six were injured, with fires breaking out and damage reported to warehouses, shops, and service facilities. In Podilskyi, two more victims—including a child—were found under the rubble after a drone struck an 18-story building.

Emergency crews rescued survivors from the debris, including a mother and child, and evacuated residents from nearby high-rises.

Other districts were also affected. Fires broke out in residential buildings in Desnianskyi, while in Shevchenkivskyi, strikes hit near homes and even a children’s playground. By morning, much of the city was covered in thick smoke.

Among the injured were four emergency medics and two police officers who were responding to the attack.

Dnipro and region

In Dnipro and the surrounding region, three people were killed, and 34 were injured as a result of drone, missile, and artillery strikes, according to Oleksandr Gandzha, the head of the Dnipropetrovsk region military administration.

In the city of Dnipro, two people died, and 30 were wounded, with damage reported to residential buildings, administrative facilities, businesses, and vehicles.

Elsewhere in the region, a 14-year-old girl was injured in the Novooleksandrivka community, while in Nikopol, a 37-year-old man was killed and three others wounded, two of them seriously.

Residential buildings and vehicles were also damaged.

Odesa

Odesa recorded the highest number of fatalities, with at least nine people killed and 23 injured after multiple waves of missile and drone attacks, according to Ohel Kiper, the head of the Odesa region military administration.

One strike hit a multi-story residential building, sparking a large fire and causing extensive destruction, with some apartments completely destroyed.

The attack also damaged port infrastructure, warehouses, and residential areas. The blast wave shattered windows in several dormitory buildings.

In the Khadzhibey district, infrastructure and housing were damaged, with more than 300 windows blown out. In the Prymorskyi district, damage was reported in a public park.

Kharkiv

In Kharkiv, two people were injured as strikes hit several districts.

In the Industrialnyi district, a civilian vehicle caught fire. In the Nemyshlianskyi district, an impact on a roadway damaged nearby homes and a gas network. Another drone strike in the Saltivskyi district caused a fire in an outbuilding and shattered windows in a residential high-rise.

Poltava region

In the Poltava region, falling debris damaged residential buildings in two districts.

In the Kremenchuk district, the roof of a home was damaged, while in the Poltava district, a two-story building sustained damage to its roof and windows. No casualties were reported.

Cherkasy region

Air defenses in the Cherkasy region shot down four Russian missiles and 30 drones.

However, falling debris and blast waves damaged industrial infrastructure. A fire broke out at one site but was quickly extinguished. No injuries were reported.

Earlier, in a series of attacks, Russian forces targeted several Ukrainian cities, including Dnipro, Zaporizhzhia, Cherkasy, and Sumy, causing significant damage, fires, and casualties on April 15.
