In a deadly airstrike, Russian forces bombed a correctional facility in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region using guided aerial bombs, killing 17 inmates and injuring more than 40.

Russian forces carried out a deadly overnight airstrike on a correctional facility in Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia region, killing 17 people and injuring 42 others, the Ukrainian Ministry of Justice reported on July 29.

The attack took place at approximately 11:28 p.m. local time on July 28, when Russian aircraft launched four guided aerial bombs (KABs) at the Bilenke Correctional Colony.

The strike destroyed the prison’s cafeteria and caused significant damage to the administrative headquarters and quarantine unit.

In total, 17 inmates were killed and 42 others were injured, including several who were hospitalized with severe wounds.

Another 40 individuals sustained varying degrees of injury. One staff member of the institution suffered minor shrapnel injuries to the face.

According to the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine, roughly 50 personnel from Ukraine’s State Criminal-Executive Service have been deployed to maintain order inside the facility.

Authorities confirmed that all injured individuals have received medical treatment and are currently under supervision in the prison’s medical unit, guard posts, and other secured areas. They added that the perimeter remains intact and there is no threat of escape.

Andriy Yermak, head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, condemned the attack as another blatant war crime committed by Russia.

“Russia has struck a correctional facility in the Zaporizhzhia region. Nearby residential buildings have been destroyed,” Yermak wrote on X.

“This is yet another war crime committed by the Russians — and they won’t stop unless they are stopped.”

Earlier, Russian forces launched a missile strike on the city of Kamyanske in Ukraine’s Dnipropetrovsk region overnight, killing two people and injuring five others.
