Russian command is redeploying reserves from the Sievierodonetsk and Kramatorsk directions to the Kursk region, stated by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) on September 8.

According to ISW referencing Ukrainian military analyst Kostyantyn Mashovets, Russian military command is redeploying one airborne (VDV) regiment and reconnaissance battalion of the 106th VDV Division from the Siversk and Kramatorsk directions and at least one self-propelled artillery battalion from the 20th Motorized Rifle Division (8th Combined Arms Army [CAA], Southern Military District [SMD]) from the Kurakhove direction to Kursk region.

The ISW adds that Russian forces carried out counterattacks in the Kursk region on September 8, amidst ongoing Ukrainian offensive operations in the area. Specifically:

  • In Korenevo;

  • East of Korenevo near Olgovka;

  • Southeast of Sudzha near Cherkasskaya Konopelka.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian forces continued their attacks:

  • Southwest of Korenevo near Snagost and Vyshnevka;

  • Northwest of Sudzha near Malaya Loknya;

  • North of Sudzha near Maryivka;

  • Northeast of Sudzha near Martinovka;

  • And southeast of Sudzha near Cherkasskaya Konopelka.

The ISW report referenced Ukrainian State Border Service Spokesperson Andriy Demchenko that the Ukrainian operation in the Kursk region is enabling Ukrainian forces to build fortifications directly on the Ukrainian-Russian border in the Sumy region. This contrasts with other border areas, where Ukrainian forces are forced to position their fortifications further from the border due to Russian shelling.
