Russian Strike Damages Qatar Embassy in Kyiv During Massive Attack on Ukraine

During a large-scale Russian attack on Ukraine overnight on January 9, the building of the Embassy of Qatar was damaged, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported on the same day.

“In addition to our civilian infrastructure and energy facilities, the building of the Embassy of Qatar was damaged overnight by a Russian drone. This is a country that has done so much to mediate with Russia in order to secure the release of prisoners of war and civilians held in Russian prisons,” Zelenskyy said.

The president called for a “clear response from the world,” first and foremost from the United States. He emphasized that Russia must receive unmistakable signals that it has an obligation to focus on diplomacy and face consequences each time it instead chooses killing and the destruction of infrastructure.

The president added that the attack serves as a stark reminder to all of Ukraine’s partners that providing air defense systems to Ukraine must remain a constant priority.

Overnight on January 9, Russia struck Kyiv in a large-scale attack, killing at least four people and wounding nearly two dozen others, Ukrainian officials said.

During the strike, 36 missiles and 242 unmanned aerial vehicles of various types at Ukraine. Among them was a medium-range ballistic missile “Oreshnik,” launched from the Kapustin Yar test range in Russia’s Astrakhan region.
