“Share the Light”: Public Art Installation Illuminates Kyiv Station Amid Wartime Blackouts

On the longest night of the year, Kyiv’s Central Railway Station was illuminated with a large-scale interactive light installation titled “Share the Light.”
The project, designed by Ukrainian lighting artist Mykola Kabluk, invites the public to participate in creating a visual display on the station’s historic facade using their mobile phones.
The installation launched on December 21, coinciding with the winter solstice, and will run through December 25, operating during two daily time slots: 5:00 to 7:30 AM and 5:00 to 11:00 PM.

All lighting equipment is powered by generators, underscoring the energy challenges many Ukrainians continue to face due to the ongoing war.
Visitors to the station can scan a QR code to access a mobile web application that allows them to select one of three colors and submit a short message.
Each color carries symbolic meaning: red represents life and warmth, green stands for renewal and hope, and blue symbolizes thought and dreams. The selected color and message are projected onto the station’s exterior in real time.

According to the creator, the project is meant to foster a sense of emotional connection and national solidarity.
“Ukraine continues to endure difficult circumstances, but our inner light—our resilience and unity—remains strong,” said Mykola Kabluk, founder and art director of Expolight Arts, the organization behind the installation. “This work gives people a chance to express that spirit and contribute to a shared national message.”

The Kyiv Central Railway Station, located on Vokzalna Square, has played a critical role in the country’s infrastructure throughout the war, serving as a major point of transit and refuge for civilians.
The installation is also supported by a national digital campaign.
On December 21, public figures across Ukraine—including artists, athletes, and media personalities—are posting their personal reflections on the year’s “brightest moments” to social media. The campaign encourages Ukrainians to participate by using the Instagram “Add Yours” sticker titled “My Bright Moments of the Year.”
The project is produced by Expolight Arts in partnership with Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine’s national railway operator.
Earlier, it was reported that a Russian attack on Odesa damaged a piece of critical infrastructure, temporarily cutting electricity, water, and heating to parts of one of the city’s densely populated districts.
