The Syrian opposition forces have reportedly taken full control of Latakia province and Tartus, home to Russian military bases, according to a Syrian source cited by Russia's state news agency TASS.

Reportedly, the armed opposition groups entered the territories of Tartus and Jableh following the opposition's announcement of the overthrow of Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad. The source also emphasized that opposition forces did not breach Russian bases in Tartus and Hmeimim.

"Since yesterday, the opposition has taken full control of Latakia province, including the cities of Tartus [in Tartus province] and Jableh. The opposition forces have not entered and do not intend to enter the territory of Russian military bases, which continue to operate as usual," the source claimed.

The war in Syria began in 2011 as a predominantly peaceful uprising against Bashar al-Assad but escalated into a long-lasting war, claiming the lives of hundreds of thousands and displacing millions.

On December 8, the Syrian opposition forces declared the overthrow of al-Assad after seizing control of Damascus, bringing an end to more than five decades of authoritarian dynastic rule.

This rapid turn of events has reshaped the region's political dynamics, posing significant challenges to key foreign allies of the Assad regime, including Russia and Iran.
