US President Donald Trump has issued a “complete and total endorsement” of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, praising him as a “true friend” and a “winner” ahead of the country’s April 12 parliamentary vote. The endorsement was published on the Truth Social platform on March 25.

Trump’s post characterized Orbán as a “truly strong and powerful Leader” with a proven track record. He specifically highlighted Orbán’s stance on illegal immigration and his economic policies, claiming that relations between the US and Hungary reached “new heights of cooperation” under the Trump administration.

“Viktor works hard to Protect Hungary, Grow the Economy, Create Jobs, Promote Trade, Stop Illegal Immigration, and Ensure LAW AND ORDER!” Trump wrote, adding that Orbán “will never let the great people of Hungary down.”

This public backing comes at a critical moment for Orbán, whose Fidesz party faces an unprecedented challenge from Péter Magyar’s surging Tisza Party. For Ukraine, the endorsement underscores the tightening alliance between Trump and a European leader frequently accused of obstructing EU military aid to Ukraine. Orbán’s government remains an outlier in Europe for its continued high-level engagement with the Kremlin, a stance that has isolated Budapest within the bloc.

The diplomatic friction between Budapest and the EU reached a breaking point in March after Hungary vetoed a €90 billion financial aid package for Ukraine. This retaliation followed a January 27 Russian drone strike on the Druzhba pipeline near Brody, which halted oil transit to Hungary and prompted Viktor Orbán to accuse Kyiv of “blackmail.”

Despite evidence of severe infrastructure damage, Orbán has tied the release of vital EU funds to the restoration of Russian oil flows and recent revelations also exposed that Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó maintained routine contact with the Kremlin during confidential Brussels summits, moves condemned by the EU as a betrayal of European security.
