Trump Promises Action on Ukraine-Russia Peace Talks: “Something Is Going to Happen”

US President Donald Trump told CBS News that he remains committed to pursuing a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, despite uncertainty over a potential meeting between Russian leader Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as was reported on September 3.
“I’ve been watching it, I’ve been seeing it, and I’ve been talking about it with President Putin and President Zelenskyy,” Trump said. “Something is going to happen, but they are not ready yet. But something is going to happen. We are going to get it done.”
His comments come as Russia continues to strike Ukraine, including a late-August drone and missile attack on Kyiv that killed at least 23 people, including four children. Trump said he is unhappy with the casualties but remains focused on brokering a deal.

Trump emphasized his approach to diplomacy involves bringing key leaders together to negotiate directly, rather than ruling out possibilities beforehand.
“Once I get them in a room together, or get them at least speaking together, they seem to work out. We’ve saved millions of lives,” he said.
He also noted watching Putin attend a military parade in Beijing alongside the leaders of China and North Korea, saying his relationships with all three leaders are “very good” and will be tested in the coming weeks.
Previously, Vladimir Putin said he is ready to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Moscow “if he is prepared.”
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha rejected the conditions, pointing instead to international efforts already underway. At least seven countries—Austria, the Holy See, Switzerland, Türkiye, and three Gulf states—have expressed readiness to host a summit.
