U.S. President Donald Trump, delivering a speech at the White House on March 7, stated that he believes Putin is doing what “anyone else would do”, and is aiming to end the war and reach a settlement.
The U.S. President was asked whether he believes that Russian leader Vladimir Putin is taking advantage of the U.S. decision to pause aid to Ukraine.
He noted that the war is now affecting Putin more significantly than before and acknowledged that Ukraine is enduring heavy losses. However, when discussing Ukraine’s willingness to negotiate, Trump appeared uncertain, saying, “I think they do,” but adding that he “doesn’t quite get it.”

Speaking during an update on the U.S. economy, Donald Trump was asked whether he still believes Putin is committed to peace. He responded affirmatively, saying, “I think we’re doing very well with Russia. But right now, they’re bombing the hell out of Ukraine.”
Trump also remarked that he is “finding it more difficult to deal with Ukraine” and suggested that securing a final peace deal “may be easier to deal with Russia, which is odd, as they have all the cards.”
Looking ahead to next week’s meeting in Saudi Arabia, Trump said he is trying to help Ukraine but added that “they have to get on the ball, to get the job done.”
Previously, Keith Kellogg, the U.S. Special Representative for Ukraine and Russia under President Donald Trump, commented on Trump’s promise to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours.
