US President Donald Trump is reportedly considering new tariffs on Russian oil imports due to ongoing concerns over the war in Ukraine and recent comments made by Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

According to NBC News, Trump expressed frustration with the Russian leader during a private conversation with NBC anchor Kristen Welker. “Just a few hours ago, President Trump called me and said he was ‘angry’ at Putin and threatened to impose additional tariffs on Russian oil,” Welker stated.

Trump’s comments appear to be a response to Putin’s remarks concerning Ukrainian leadership and ongoing hostilities. According to NBC News, Trump warned that if a peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine cannot be reached, and if he determines Russia is at fault, secondary tariffs would be introduced.

“If we cannot make a deal with Russia to stop the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I believe it’s Russia’s fault—though it may not be—but if I believe it is, I will impose secondary tariffs on all oil coming out of Russia,” Trump said, as quoted by NBC.

He added that such measures would apply not only to direct imports but also to third parties purchasing Russian oil. “If Russia does not agree to end the war, I will impose secondary tariffs on all Russian oil. That means if you buy Russian oil, you cannot do business with the United States,” Trump reportedly said.

NBC News highlighted that Trump was particularly displeased by Putin’s statements suggesting the need for new leadership in Ukraine, which the US President characterized as unconstructive.

Earlier, a joint report by Germany’s Federal Intelligence Service and the Bundeswehr, cited by BILD, warned that Russia is preparing for a potential large-scale war with NATO by 2030. Despite ongoing operations in Ukraine, Moscow is replenishing its forces, expanding its defense industry, and planning to increase military presence near NATO’s eastern borders.
