Two European Countries Invest $116 Million in Greyshark Underwater Drones for Military Use

Two European governments have signed contracts to purchase underwater drones for military use, the German manufacturer Euroatlas confirmed to Reuters on November 27.
The deals, worth over $116 million, involve the company’s Greyshark autonomous underwater drone, which will be used to monitor undersea cables, track submarine activity, and detect mines. Euroatlas CEO Eugen Ciemnyjewsky stated that while the drones would not be weaponized, they would serve special military applications.

The Greyshark drone can operate for up to 5.5 days, with plans for a new model capable of staying underwater for 16 weeks. While Ciemnyjewski declined to name the purchasing countries, he mentioned that both are closely allied. Interest in autonomous underwater drones is also rising in other regions, including Europe and Asia, according to Reuters.

Naval drones, such as the Greyshark, have become increasingly important, especially amid the Ukraine-Russia war, where surface naval drones, such as Sea Baby, are used by Ukraine for surveillance and strikes. Additionally, Australia is investing $1.1 billion in its own autonomous undersea vehicles for defense purposes.
Previously, Ukraine’s military intelligence carried out a covert multi-phase drone operation targeting Russian-controlled gas platforms in the Black Sea, according to The Times.
The attack introduced a new capability: submersible drone-torpedoes with long-range navigation and 80-kilogram warheads. The mission involved both surface and underwater drones and marked a significant development in Ukraine’s naval warfare tactics.
