Ukraine and Germany have bolstered their defense industry cooperation with a new agreement, signed by Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Smyhal and German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius, as announced by Shmyhal in a Telegram post on October 15.

Minister Smyhal expressed gratitude to Germany for its substantial contributions to Ukraine’s defense, particularly highlighted during the recent the Ukraine Defense Contact Group (UDCG)  meeting. He also acknowledged Minister Pistorius' personal leadership in supporting Ukraine.

The agreement layed the groundwork for expanding bilateral cooperation in defense industry, technology, and innovation.

It aims to foster joint industrial projects, including the production of Lynx infantry fighting vehicles (IFVs) and ammunition in Ukraine, as well as the repair of Gepard anti-aircraft systems and Leopard tanks, Shmyhal wrote.

Main provisions of the agreement include:

  • Promotion of innovation in the defense industry;

  • Joint research and development (R&D), modernization, and technical support for production;

  • Procurement and exchange of technical information, experience, and best practices;

  • Collaboration in training programs and exercises.

Minister Shmyhal thanked Germany for its ongoing and consistent support of Ukraine and its defenders.

Previously, it was reported that Germany planned to invest almost 7 billion euros ($8.1 billion) in new armored vehicles, according to documents from the Ministry of Finance cited by Reuters.
