Ukraine and Russia Engage in Humanitarian Talks, Peace Negotiations Not Yet Underway, Says Umerov

Ukraine and Russia are currently only engaged in negotiations on humanitarian matters, specifically concerning the release of prisoners of war. This was stated by Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, Rustem Umerov, in an interview with CNN on September 19.
When asked whether negotiations between Russia and Ukraine regarding the end of the war are truly taking place, Umerov clarified that discussions are currently limited to humanitarian issues, particularly the release of Ukrainian prisoners of war.
“We are currently continuing with the humanitarian aspect, where we are freeing prisoners of war,” Umerov said.
According to him, European leaders, along with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, visited Washington, where agreements were made for bilateral and trilateral meetings.
“So at this stage, I think we are waiting for the trilateral and bilateral meetings to take place,” he added.

Earlier in August, US President Donald Trump held a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Washington. European leaders joined them later, with the main focus being on defining the next steps to achieve peace in Ukraine.
On September 18, Ukraine has repatriated 1,000 bodies, which Russia claims belong to Ukrainian servicemen, the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War reported on Telegram.
Previously, Trump stated that Russian leader Vladimir Putin has let him down on the issue of resolving Russia’s war against Ukraine. Trump made the statement during a press conference with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on September 18.
