Ukraine Calls UN Security Council Meeting Over North Korean Military Involvement
Ukraine has summoned a meeting of the United Nations Security Council to discuss the deployment of North Korean troops on the frontline. The session is scheduled for today, October 30.
According to Ukraine’s permanent representative to the UN, Serhiy Kyslytsia, the meeting was called in response to concerns raised about the involvement of North Korean forces in the ongoing Russia’s war against Ukraine. Kyslytsia announced that the session is expected to begin around 10:15 PM Kyiv time.
This development follows Ukraine’s formal request to the Swiss presidency of the Security Council regarding the matter. The participation of North Korean military personnel in the war against Ukraine has raised significant international attention, prompting discussions among member states about the implications of such actions.
The Security Council’s deliberations will focus on the impact of North Korea’s involvement and what measures, if any, should be taken in response to this situation.
Earlier reports had suggested that North Korean workers might be sent to support Russia’s infrastructure efforts in occupied territories. However, this recent movement of soldiers to Russia’s Kursk region marks a new level of military cooperation, with approximately 3,000 North Korean troops positioned just 50 kilometers from Ukraine.
On October 26, Spanish newspaper EL PAÍS reported that Ukrainian forces targeted specific locations in Russia’s Kursk region where North Korean troops are believed to be stationed. This area has become a focal point in Ukraine’s strategy to counter potential reinforcements, with Ukrainian military officials reportedly aiming to disrupt Russian preparations and logistical setups near the border.
