Ukraine’s Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced on April 17 that a private air defense unit successfully intercepted a Russian jet-powered Shahed drone.

The target was traveling at a speed exceeding 400 kilometers per hour. This marks the first time such a high-speed projectile has been downed by a non-state fire group.

Fedorov emphasized that the successful interception of a jet-powered drone traveling at 400 kilometers per hour represents a new level of technical difficulty.

According to the minister, Russia is increasing its use of jet-powered drones. These models are significantly faster than previous versions, making them much harder for traditional units to track and intercept. The private groups are designed to act as an additional layer of protection specifically for critical infrastructure sites.

The project currently involves 19 different enterprises that are forming their own air defense teams. These groups do not operate independently but are fully integrated into the unified command system of the Ukrainian Air Force. The primary goal is to increase defensive capacity quickly without placing more pressure on regular military units.

Following this successful test case, the defense ministry plans to expand the initiative. The focus will remain on increasing the number of targets destroyed and decreasing response times to aerial threats. This follows an earlier experimental phase where a participant company prepared its own group, which has already been active in the Kharkiv region.

"A private air defense group has shot down a jet Shahed at a speed of 400+ km/h for the first time. We continue to develop the private air defense project. A private air defense group in the Kharkiv region is actively shooting down Shaheds, specifically, the first downing of a jet drone has been recorded," the minister stated.

"One of the elements of this system is private groups that strengthen the protection of critical infrastructure. The goal of the project is to quickly scale capabilities without additional load on combat units," the head of the Ministry of Defense emphasized.

"The next step is scaling the project and results: more downed targets and faster response to threats," Fedorov added.

On April 16, 2026, Russia launched its most devastating aerial bombardment of the year, targeting civilian infrastructure and residential areas across Ukraine with a massive wave of nearly 700 drones and dozens of missiles.

The coordinated attack resulted in at least 18 fatalities and left over 100 people wounded, according to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

While Ukrainian defense forces successfully intercepted 667 of the incoming targets, including 90% of those launched during the assault, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that the country continued to face a critical shortage of anti-ballistic missiles.
