Commemorating the third anniversary of the liberation of Kherson from Russian occupation, the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine has released data detailing over a thousand cultural assets systematically looted by the Russian forces from the O. Shovkunenko Kherson Regional Art Gallery.

According to the list, unveiled on War&Sanctions portal on November 11, during the temporary occupation of the city, Russian military personnel, acting under the direction of Russian museum staff, systematically extracted priceless exhibits from the art museum. The stolen collection encompasses various art forms, including painting, graphic arts, sculpture, and icon painting.

A portion of these cultural treasures was subsequently and illegally relocated to the territory of Russian-occupied Crimea. The War&Sanctions platform currently lists data corresponding to 1,233 pilfered paintings. This number represents only a fraction of the total cultural heritage unlawfully removed from the museum by the invaders.

Among the documented stolen works are masterpieces by prominent Ukrainian and European artists from the 19th and 20th centuries, including Pieter Lely, Maria Prymachenko, Mykola Pymonenko, Ivan Aivazovsky, and Serhiy Vasylkivsky.

“By stealing and appropriating Ukrainian cultural heritage, Russia is attempting to eradicate Ukrainian national identity, justify aggression and occupation,” the intelligense emphasized.

Earlier, the “Mariupol Bull Figurine” was integrated into the list of the world's ten most sought-after artifacts. The inclusion follows the high probability of the figurine being removed from Ukraine during the period of the Russian invasion.
