Ukraine to Construct 15 Underground Schools in Sumy Region, Ensuring Secure Education

Ukraine’s Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has announced plans to construct four underground schools in Sumy city, with an additional 11 planned for the Sumy region. The announcement was made via his official Telegram channel on May 7.
During a visit to a Sumy school currently building an underground shelter, Shmyhal noted that the institution is operating in a mixed format, with classes held both online and offline.
“I am grateful to the teachers for educating children in these challenging conditions for the country,” Shmyhal said.
The underground shelter, once completed, will accommodate up to 500 people, providing a secure learning space. The project is funded with approximately 117 million UAH from state and local budgets and is expected to be completed by the start of the next academic year.

Shmyhal also met with Serhii Sukhomlyn, head of the State Restoration Agency, to discuss how to simplify the implementation of similar projects for smaller educational institutions.
“The safety of the educational process is a priority,” Shmyhal stated. “We are working to ensure that more children can access education in secure and comfortable environments.”
Earlier, the second underground school was officially opened in the Kharkiv region, providing a secure educational space for students in Pechenihy, a village southeast of Kharkiv that has experienced repeated Russian air attacks. The underground facility offers a safe learning environment for 750 children who previously lacked access to offline education due to security concerns.
