Ukraine Uncovers Russian Looting of 170 Historical Artifacts From Zaporizhzhia and Crimea

Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence (HUR) has published new evidence of Russia’s systematic looting of Ukrainian cultural heritage.
According to HUR’s report on October 8, the report reveals details on more than 170 artifacts stolen from museums and archaeological sites in occupied territories — including pieces from the National Historical and Archaeological Museum “Kamiana Mohyla.”
The data, released under the “Stolen Heritage” section of the War & Sanctions portal, documents how Russian forces plundered over 140 artifacts during illegal excavations in Crimea.
The operations took place at the Southern Suburb of Chersonesus Taurica, the Kadikovske settlement—a Roman-era camp and the Byzantine monument “Church of St. John the Baptist.”

In 2023, another 37 exhibits were taken from the “Kamiana Mohyla” museum in Zaporizhzhia region and moved to the “Chersonesus Taurica” museum in occupied Crimea under the guise of a temporary exhibition titled The Spiritual World of Ancestors in the Petroglyphs of Kamiana Mohyla.
According to HUR, some of the published findings were provided by participants of the international War & Sanctions hackathon.
“By appropriating Ukrainian culture and history, Russia seeks to erase Ukrainian national identity and legitimize its aggression and occupation,” the intelligence agency said.
Earlier, the Mariupol Bull Figurine, believed to have been stolen during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, was placed on the list of the world’s ten most wanted stolen artifacts.
