Ukrainian Authorities Arrest Suspect in Killing of Former Speaker of Parliament Andrii Parubiy

A suspect has been detained in connection with the murder of former Ukrainian parliamentary speaker Andrii Parubiy, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on September 1.
“The suspect has given an initial testimony,” Zelenskyy wrote on Telegram. “Urgent investigative actions are currently under way to establish all the circumstances of this murder.”
Zelenskyy thanked law enforcement for their swift and coordinated work and emphasized that all the circumstances of the horrific murder must be uncovered.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko stated the alleged shooter was detained overnight in the Khmelnytskyi region.

“Many details cannot be shared at this time,” Klymenko wrote. “I will only say that the crime was carefully planned: the victim’s movements were studied, a route was mapped out, and an escape plan was thought through.”
According to the Office of the Prosecutor General, the detained 52-year-old Lviv resident has been formally charged with the murder of Member of Parliament Andrii Parubiy. Investigative actions with the suspect are ongoing.
The charge was signed by Mykola Meret, head of the Lviv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, who stated that “the suspicion is based on objective evidence indicating that the detained individual committed the murder of the Member of Parliament.”
Commenting on Parubiy’s death, former Deputy Prosecutor General Gyunduz Mamedov added that Russia wages war not only with Shaheds and missiles, but also with fear, targeting those who “create meaning and work for Ukraine.”

“This is a systemic strategy. And it is a pattern that cannot be ignored. The murder of public figure Iryna Farion in July 2024. The shooting of Odesa activist Demyan Hanul in March 2025. A series of attacks on activist and volunteer Serhii Sternenko, the most recent of which took place this spring,” he stated.
Mamedov noted that if the investigation proves Russian authorities were behind these crimes, they would clearly qualify as international crimes. He added that if investigators establish a systemic pattern, the actions could be classified as crimes against humanity under Article 7 of the Rome Statute, which would fundamentally expand the scope of responsibility to include not only individual perpetrators but also the military-political leadership.
Earlier, it was reported that Andrii Parubiy was shot dead in Lviv on Saturday, August 30, in what authorities described as a targeted attack. Police said the incident took place shortly after midday in the city’s Frankivsk district, where responding officers found Parubiy fatally wounded by multiple gunshots.
