Ukraine is open to meaningful negotiations with Russia to achieve a just peace, Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha said in comments to Radio Svoboda on June 13.

“We need negotiations where decisions are made and key issues are resolved. The most recent round of talks in Istanbul essentially amounted to a discussion on prisoner exchanges. That’s why we are interested in a meeting at the presidential level, and we are ready for such a meeting. What matters most to us now is moving closer to peace, establishing a ceasefire, and stopping the fighting,” Sybiha stated.

The minister emphasized that previous rounds of negotiations have demonstrated Ukraine’s constructive stance and Russia’s unwillingness to engage in a genuine peace process.

“Ukraine has shown that it has never been, is not, and will not be an obstacle to peace. We are committed to peaceful efforts. We welcome the efforts of the United States and of President Trump personally toward achieving a just peace and ending this war within this year — because the war is taking place on our territory, and our people are suffering,” Sybiha noted.

According to the minister, Ukraine had demonstrated its willingness to engage by holding meetings at the appropriate level and was prepared to discuss substantive issues aimed at advancing peace. He emphasized that this was a clear signal of Ukraine’s commitment to a peaceful resolution.

However, he noted that the Russian side responded with complete inadequacy, as reflected in the document they submitted, which he described as utterly unreasonable. Sybiha emphasized that Russia’s rhetoric remained rooted in ultimatums and demands for Ukraine’s capitulation.

The Foreign Minister also called on the international community to strengthen sanctions against Russia and expressed hope that the upcoming G7 summit, scheduled for June 15–17 in Canada, would bring forward new sanctions measures, including decisive action regarding frozen Russian assets.

Earlier, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia is engaging in negotiations with Ukraine merely to evade the imposition of new and more severe sanctions.

He noted that the Kremlin is seeking to project an image of diplomatic engagement, primarily to influence the stance of US President Donald Trump.
