Ukraine’s military intelligence service (HUR) carried out a targeted operation that destroyed a Russian 117Zh6 RLK-MC Valday radar complex at the Dzhankoy airfield in Crimea, Ukrainian defense media outlet Militarnyi reported on October 20.

The video of the strike was released on Telegram via the “Operativniy ZSU” channel. According to Militarnyi, the Valday system is designed to detect and counter small unmanned aerial systems and to disrupt UAV control links—capabilities that made it a key node in Russia’s southern air-defense and electronic-warfare network.

The Valday integrates a three-coordinate X-band radar, electro-optic tracking modules, a direction-finding suite for UAV command channels, and hookups for electronic-warfare systems. Its minimum detection range is about 300 meters, while larger targets can be detected at ranges exceeding 15 kilometers.

The strike reportedly occurred in the evening or at night while the complex was likely on watch. Ukrainian analysts described the hit as both operationally and symbolically significant.

“The destruction of systems like Valday has not only operational but also symbolic significance, since this system is considered one of the newest air-defense and electronic-warfare assets of the Russian army,” Militarnyi experts note.

By removing a counter-UAV and EW node at Dzhankoy, Ukraine has increased the tactical freedom of Ukrainian strike drones operating in the region and applied fresh pressure to Russian air-defense coverage in Crimea.

Russia has not yet issued an official account of the incident. Independent verification of the HUR video and the full extent of damage was not immediately available.

Earlier, Ukraine’s 92nd Assault Brigade destroyed a Russian Kasta-2E2 radar system using a loitering munition, in what marked the third confirmed strike against Russian air defense radars in October.
