The U.S. intelligence-sharing pause with Kyiv impacts early warnings about Russian drone and missile attacks on Ukrainian military and civilian targets, The New York Times reported on March 5, citing anonymous U.S. and Ukrainian officials.

On March 5, CIA Director John Ratcliffe confirmed that the United States has temporarily halted intelligence sharing with Ukraine.

This intelligence-sharing suspension follows the U.S. decision to temporarily pause its military aid to Ukraine in an attempt to pressure Kyiv into swift negotiations with Russia.

In addition to military targeting data, the pause also impacted intelligence on early warnings of Russian drone and missile strikes against military and civilian targets, according to a source familiar with the situation.

“Everything that came from the Defense Department has stopped,” said Valerii Kondratiuk, the former head of HUR . “This mostly concerns the exchange of imagery. This isn’t critical because European companies have their own satellites, but not all these are focused on military dislocation and movements, which is important.”

According to NYT, a senior Trump administration official stated that the initial plan was to suspend military aid and intelligence sharing for one to two weeks as part of an effort to pressure Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“The pause on providing matériel to Ukraine against Putin’s aggression is unconscionable on its own, but the idea that we will now withhold lifesaving intelligence from Ukrainians who are fighting and dying is unforgivable,” Congressman Jim Himes said. “Any pause in intelligence sharing must end immediately.”

On March 5, White House National Security Advisor Mike Waltz stated that the United States will consider resuming military aid deliveries to Ukraine if progress is made in negotiations with Kyiv.
