The United States Senate has passed its annual defense authorization bill, which includes $800 million in security assistance for Ukraine over the 2026 and 2027 fiscal years.

The legislation, known as the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), has been forwarded to President Donald Trump for approval, according to a report by Reuters published on December 17.

The funding will be provided through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI), a Pentagon-managed program that procures military equipment from American defense contractors and sends it to Ukraine. The program is a key mechanism through which the US continues to support Ukraine’s defense capabilities in its ongoing war with Russia.

Former Voice of America correspondent Ostap Yarysh confirmed via social media that the NDAA includes the new $800 million allocation for Ukraine for fiscal years 2026 and 2027.

Beyond aid to Ukraine, the legislation also includes measures to preserve the current level of US military presence in Europe. Specifically, it restricts the Department of Defense from reducing the number of US troops stationed in Europe below 76,000 personnel.

The bill also bars the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), the top NATO military officer on the continent, from stepping down from the position voluntarily.

The bill does not include funding to support a proposed renaming of the Department of Defense to the Department of War—a change reportedly sought by President Trump but one that requires Congressional authorization. The measure was ultimately left out of the final version of the bill.

Earlier, it was reported that the US House has approved a sweeping defense bill that strengthens security in Europe and curbs Donald Trump’s efforts to scale back America’s traditional alliances
