Germany Commits $1.3 Billion in Military Support to Ukraine, Including Patriot Systems and Self-Propelled Artillery

Ukraine has strengthened its defense cooperation with Germany through a series of important agreements worth over $1.3 billion, according to Ukrainian Minister of Defense Denys Shmyhal on December 17.
One of the key aspects of the agreements is the long-term supply of spare parts for Ukraine's Patriot air defense systems.

“This will allow for faster repairs and upgrades, helping to maintain the operational readiness of these vital defense assets,” Shmyhal stated.
Additionally, the agreements include the purchase of Ukrainian-made drones worth $216 million, which are crucial for halting Russian advances and increasing Russian casualties.
Another major component is a large artillery project that will see the production of 200 Bohdana self-propelled artillery systems, mounted on a new Zetros chassis, valued at $810 million. This will significantly boost Ukraine’s artillery capabilities and its ability to defend key positions.

Moreover, Ukraine will also cooperate with Germany in the joint production of Lynx drones. This collaboration involves the Ukrainian company Frontline Robotics and the German firm Quantum Systems, under the Build with Ukraine initiative. The drones will enhance Ukraine's tactical reconnaissance efforts, providing valuable intelligence on enemy movements.
In addition, Germany has committed to ensuring the uninterrupted supply of advanced electronic warfare systems for Ukraine at the tactical level, bolstering Ukraine’s ability to disrupt Russian communications and command structures.
According to Shmyhal, these agreements follow a commitment made by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. As part of these efforts, Germany has pledged $12 billion in support to Ukraine in the coming year.

Minister Shmyhal expressed his appreciation for the continued support, saying, “We are deeply grateful to Minister of Defense Boris Pistorius for this important announcement during the ‘Ramstein’ meeting. The delivery of two promised Patriot systems and the ninth IRIS-T system will not only help protect Ukrainian cities but also enhance European security as a whole.”
Earlier, Luxembourg contributed an additional $11 million to Ukraine's Energy Support Fund.
