Washington Scraps Budapest Summit as Russia Insists Ukraine Must Cede More Territory

The United States has canceled a planned Budapest summit between US President Donald Trump and Russian leader Vladimir Putin after Moscow refused to soften its territorial demands regarding Ukraine, the Financial Times (FT) reported on October 31.
According to the report, the decision followed a tense phone call between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, during which Washington concluded that Moscow was unwilling to negotiate.

The proposed summit—intended to explore a path toward ending Russia’s war in Ukraine — was scrapped after the Kremlin reiterated that a ceasefire would require Ukraine to cede more territory, reduce its armed forces, and formally abandon NATO membership aspirations, FT stated.
Trump has publicly supported Ukraine’s call for an immediate ceasefire along current front lines, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said Kyiv is ready for peace talks but will not withdraw from additional territory.
Previously, it was reported that US intelligence agencies have concluded that Russia shows no signs of being ready to compromise on Ukraine, with Russian leader Vladimir Putin now “more dug in than ever,” according to a recent classified assessment shared with Congress, NBC News reported.
