Wolly: Ukraine’s New AI Combat Module Blends Smart Tech With PKT Firepower

The Wolly combat module is a Ukrainian-made, remotely operated weapons system that was codified and approved for use within the Defense Forces in December of 2024 by the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine.
The development of Wolly began in 2022, driven by the need to strike Russian targets accurately from a safe distance. By 2023, the module had undergone its first field tests, incorporating insights from real combat experience.
Its design features cutting-edge technologies, including automated ballistic calculations and remote control via tablet.
The Ministry of Defense of Ukraine emphasizes that what sets Wolly apart is its integrated artificial intelligence, capable of automatically identifying enemy personnel and equipment. Once a target is detected, the system locks on tracks its movement and calculates the firing trajectory to engage.

The weapons system can be equipped with either a 7.62 mm or 12.7 mm machine gun and features an automatic ammunition feed system, a thermal imaging camera.
“Our domestic weapons engineers have incorporated technological solutions into the combat module based on feedback from the front lines and the real combat experience of Ukrainian defenders,” said Deputy Minister of Defense Dmytro Klymenkov.
“A range of proposals were taken into account, from control methods to the automation of specific functions in its practical use.”

The system is designed to target unarmored vehicles and enemy personnel. It can operate autonomously for up to 130 hours. Thanks to its compact size and light weight, just 30 kilograms, Wolly is highly mobile and can be transported by a single adult.
The Defense Ministry added that when deployed at strongpoints, checkpoints, observation posts, or firing positions, the Wolly module can be used not only for engaging targets but also for remote battlefield surveillance. And most importantly, thanks to its modern communication systems, the operator can control the module from a safe distance.
It is reported that Wolly is already being effectively used on the front lines in real combat conditions—both as a standalone system and integrated with various types of ground robotic platforms. Notably, there are confirmed cases of successful enemy personnel engagement at distances exceeding 900 meters.
