Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy asked US President Donald Trump to provide Tomahawk cruise missiles during a closed-door meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations, a request Trump appeared open to considering, according to the Telegraph reporting on September 26.

In a same-day interview about the meeting, Zelenskyy said Trump “will work on it,” declining to name the system while cameras were rolling but describing a request for a capability that would enable reciprocal deep strikes if Russia targets Ukrainian infrastructure.

According to Axios, Trump told Zelenskyy he should “hit back” with similar strikes inside Russia if Moscow targets Ukrainian infrastructure, and Zelenskyy said Trump “will work on it.”

Trump’s recent shift in rhetoric has been public. Two days earlier he posted that Ukraine could “fight and WIN all of Ukraine back in its original form… with the financial support of Europe and, in particular, NATO,” following his meeting with Zelenskyy.

The Tomahawk is a long-range, subsonic cruise missile launched from warplanes, ships and submarines. Open-source assessments place its range at roughly 1,250–2,500 km and describe a conventional high-explosive warhead of about 450 kg.

Whether Washington will approve Tomahawks remains uncertain. Reuters noted in 2024 that US officials viewed the missiles as escalatory and in limited supply, even as Kyiv argued they would pressure the Russian leader toward talks.

Earlier, it was reported that President Trump was considering providing Tomahawk cruise missiles to Ukraine, while authorizing the use of 300-km ATACMS and discussing a broader assistance package.
