Drones Reach Tyumen Oil Refinery Nearly 2,000 Kilometers From Ukraine

Explosions were reported near the Tyumen Oil Refinery in western Siberia on June 20, as Russian authorities claimed to have repelled a drone attack on one of the country’s major fuel-processing facilities located nearly 2,000 kilometers from the Ukrainian border.

According to Russian regional governor Alexander Moor, air defense forces intercepted unmanned aerial vehicles targeting the refinery. Moor stated that emergency services were deployed to the area where debris allegedly fell and said the facility had not sustained damage.

“According to preliminary information, the plant was not damaged, and employees were evacuated. I am keeping the situation under my personal control,” Moor wrote on Telegram.

Videos circulated on Russian social media showed smoke rising from the area of the refinery. Local residents reported hearing at least two explosions and observed multiple fire engines moving toward the industrial site.

According to the Russian outlet ASTRA, geolocation analysis of eyewitness footage placed the smoke plume over the Tyumen Oil Refinery, formerly known as the Antipinsky Refinery. The outlet reported that the footage was filmed near the Antipino residential district adjacent to the facility.

Russian authorities also introduced temporary flight restrictions in the region. Operations at Tyumen’s Roshchino Airport were suspended, with arrivals and departures halted for a period following the reported attack.

The Tyumen Oil Refinery is one of Russia’s largest independent oil-processing facilities. Located in the industrial zone of Tyumen, the plant has an annual processing capacity of approximately 8 million metric tons of crude oil.

According to company data, its refining depth reaches around 98%, producing Euro-5 diesel fuel, petroleum coke, bitumen, fuel oil, and other petroleum products.

Earlier, multiple energy infrastructure sites across temporarily occupied Crimea were reportedly targeted in an overnight drone attack, including the Tavriiska Thermal Power Plant near Simferopol, a TES fuel and liquefied gas terminal, and a gas distribution station connected to the Dzhankoi–Simferopol pipeline. NASA FIRMS satellite data detected thermal anomalies and fires at the facilities following the strike.
