A newly cleared section of Moskvoretsky Park in Moscow’s Kuntsevo district may be the site of a new position for S-400 air defense systems, Russian media The Insider, citing an analysis of satellite imagery by OSINT researchers jembob and Mark Krutov, reported on June 21.

The analysts examined the area where local residents protested tree cutting in May and compared it with other similar military sites around Moscow.

Russian authorities have not officially disclosed the purpose of the construction site.

Researcher jembob published Copernicus satellite images showing a cleared area of roughly four hectares near the local Medik stadium. The analyst noted that the location sits on one of the highest points in western Moscow inside the Moscow Ring Road, making it suitable for air defense deployment.

According to jembob, the size and shape of the site match the parameters of new S-300 and S-400 positions that have appeared around the Russian capital. However, the researcher stressed that the assessment still requires further confirmation.

Current satellite images of the cleared forest area show several light-colored objects. Because of the limited resolution, it is not yet possible to determine exactly what they are.

They could be temporary construction structures or heavy machinery. They could also be concrete pads of the kind typically used to deploy missile launchers and radar systems.

Journalist and OSINT analyst Mark Krutov said new S-300 and S-400 positions built in Moscow after the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine have similar dimensions. He cited four comparable sites ranging from 3.6 to 4.6 hectares.

Residents in Kuntsevo began protesting the destruction of the forest inside Moskvoretsky Park on May 24. Workers with heavy machinery arrived near the stadium, began cutting down trees, and later started laying asphalt.

Residents said they were not shown any permits for the work.

According to The Insider, that same day, Alexey Alexandrov, prefect of Moscow’s Western Administrative District, arrived at the site and told protesters: “A military facility is being built, what else do you need?”

After that, police officers began detaining protesters at the official’s orders.

Earlier, reports emerged that a new Russian Pantsir air defense system was reportedly deployed near the Moscow Oil Refinery following recent Ukrainian drone strikes on the facility.
