Starlink Restrictions Strip Ukraine of One of Its Few Defenses Against Jet-Powered Shaheds

Ukraine risks losing one of its few effective defenses against Russian jet-powered Shahed drones following new restrictions on Starlink satellite communications, Ukrainian presidential technology adviser Serhii Beskrestnov, known as “Flash,” warned on October 14.

According to Beskrestnov’s Telegram channel, Starlink is used in interceptor drones that currently provide one of Ukraine’s most effective solutions for countering high-speed Russian attack drones. The restrictions could therefore affect not only Ukrainian long-range operations and frontline logistics but also the country’s ability to protect its airspace.

While much of the discussion has focused on disrupted military missions, Beskrestnov said the implications for air defense could be even more serious.
“Starlink is used in what is currently the most effective solution—interceptors—for protecting our skies from jet-powered Shaheds,” he wrote.
“In effect, through their actions, our partners are depriving us of one of the few chances we have to defend the country against jet-powered Shaheds,” Beskrestnov added.
His warning suggests that the communications restrictions could undermine Ukraine’s efforts to counter a growing threat from faster Russian attack drones, which present additional challenges for conventional drone interception systems.

Earlier on October 14, SpaceX introduced new speed restrictions on Starlink terminals used by Ukrainian forces, reportedly without prior notification.
The limitations affect the military-grade Starshield service, with connections dropping when terminals travel faster than approximately 100 mph (160 km/h). Beskrestnov said the changes had already disrupted several military missions.
Separately, Zelenskyy raised concerns about Ukraine not receiving advance intelligence warnings from Western partners ahead of recent Russian missile attacks, adding to questions about the reliability of critical US support.
