Explosive-Laden Drone Found Near Ukrainian Cargo Plane in Germany Had Russian GRU Hallmarks

An explosive-laden drone discovered near a Ukrainian cargo aircraft at Germany’s Leipzig/Halle Airport earlier in August showed characteristics associated with devices used by Russia’s military intelligence agency (GRU).

This was reported by ABC News on August 27, citing a US intelligence assessment.
A US intelligence official briefed on the investigation into the suspected sabotage plot said both the explosives attached to the drone and the construction of the device were “typical” of those previously associated with the GRU.
According to the official, the assessment was reached in coordination with German security and intelligence agencies investigating the incident.
The US assessment comes as German investigators continue examining several drones potentially connected to the suspected sabotage plot at Leipzig/Halle Airport.
Most recently, another drone bearing traces of explosives was discovered in a field near the airport in Kabelsketal on August 14. The drone, reportedly the third linked to the case, was found ten days after the first drone was discovered, Süddeutsche Zeitung reported on August 25.
Investigators examining the site subsequently detected a substance that, according to preliminary analysis, may have contained traces of RDX, a powerful military-grade explosive.
The investigation stems from an earlier incident involving a Ukrainian An-124 cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport. Overnight on August 5, a drone believed to have been fitted with an explosive device was discovered near the Ukrainian transport plane.
According to German newspaper Bild, the drone was found on the airport apron shortly before midnight, directly beside the Ukrainian Antonov aircraft.
