The aircraft penetrated approximately 8.7 kilometers, or about 5.4 miles, into Finnish territory before leaving. The incursion lasted roughly three minutes.
Finland’s Border Guard has launched a preliminary investigation into the incident to establish the circumstances surrounding the breach.

The Il-20 is a Russian military reconnaissance aircraft used for intelligence-gathering and electronic surveillance missions.
The incident marks the second reported Russian violation of Finnish airspace in just several months, adding to concerns over Moscow’s military aviation activity along NATO’s northeastern flank.
Finland joined NATO in 2023, meaning the latest Russian incursion took place inside the airspace of a member of the military alliance.
Previously, a pair of Russian Il-20 reconnaissance planes were intercepted; one of them on August 3, and later two Polish fighter aircraft were scrambled to intercept another Russian Il-20 aircraft 56 kilometers northwest of Koszalin on August 4.
