Satellite Images Reveal 10-Kilometer Traffic Jam Exiting Occupied Crimea via Kerch Bridge

Planet Labs satellite imagery reveals massive automobile congestion stretching over ten kilometers toward the Kerch Bridge crossing from Russia to the Crimean peninsula, Radio Liberty’s investigative journalism program Schemes reported on June 25.
The traffic jam originates at the Russian-controlled security checkpoint and extends past the village of Ivanivka in the Kerch district. Imagery analysts monitoring the vehicular gridlock estimate that approximately 1,500 civilian automobiles are actively attempting to exit the occupied Crimean peninsula.

The sudden surge in outward traffic coincides with compounding utility and security crises gripping the temporarily occupied Ukrainian territory, which Schemes notes has restricted transit through the corridor. The bridge’s vehicle lanes are frequently closed down due to active air defense operations, incoming missile threats, or the perceived danger of Ukrainian uncrewed surface vessels in the Black Sea, the investigative unit reported.
Furthermore, a severe regional fuel shortage and frequent electricity blackouts have prompted residents to voice widespread intentions across social media networks to leave the peninsula temporarily.
To combat growing security vulnerabilities, Russian occupation administrators have implemented rigorous search protocols at all terminal checkpoints. While intended to intercept military sabotage, these draconian measures have paralyzed both civilian movement and vital military logistics connecting the annexed territory to the Russian mainland, according to Schemes.

The highway bottleneck is exacerbated by structural damage inflicted on Crimea’s internal transit network, which has disrupted regional transport infrastructure.
Ukrainian commando units and drone forces recently executed a two-phase strike that dismantled a strategic railway bridge over the North Crimean Canal, completely severing a critical route used by the Russian military to transport heavy armor, fuel, and ammunition. Following these structural disruptions, Russian rail operators announced the cancellation of 11 train routes into the peninsula, significantly reducing rail transit capacity.
These compounding transport failures represent the consequences of a coordinated “Logistics Lockdown” campaign spearheaded by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. By isolating the peninsula through targeted strikes on bridges, ferries, and fuel terminals, the defensive initiative aims to cut off Moscow’s garrison from mainland supplies.
