HMS Prince of Wales, the largest warship in the Royal Navy fleet, has departed Scotland for a major deployment to Nordic waters and the High North as the United Kingdom increases its military presence along NATO’s northern flank, according to the Royal Navy on May 6.

The carrier left the Glen Mallan jetty in Loch Long after spending the weekend loading ammunition and supplies ahead of the operation.

The deployment group also includes the HMS Duncan and fleet tanker RFA Tidespring. Throughout the mission, the strike group will operate alongside NATO allies and members of the Joint Expeditionary Force, a northern European security coalition led by the United Kingdom.

The first stage of the deployment will focus on exercises near Bergen in Norway, where British forces will conduct swarm attack defense drills during Exercise Tamber Shield.

The exercise is designed to prepare naval forces for threats posed by fast-moving attack craft and unmanned systems operating in narrow coastal waters and fjord environments. The drills will involve Wildcat helicopters from 815 Naval Air Squadron, P2000 patrol vessels, and Norwegian missile boats.

The carrier strike group will later move farther north to participate in Dynamic Mongoose, NATO’s flagship anti-submarine warfare exercise in Northern Europe.

Captain Ben Power, commanding officer of HMS Prince of Wales, said the carrier was deploying “to demonstrate the United Kingdom’s commitment to NATO and the Joint Expeditionary Force.”

Commander James Mitchell, who leads HMS Duncan, described the destroyer’s role as providing “world-class air defence capability” for the carrier strike group and emphasized the importance of operating closely with allied forces in the North Atlantic and High North.

Commodore Rich Hewitt said the deployment sends “a clear signal of the UK’s steadfast commitment to working with regional partners and securing Europe’s northern flank.”

Previously, Sweden successfully placed its first sovereign military satellite into orbit to monitor Russian territory. The spacecraft is the first in a series of projects designed to provide independent reconnaissance as regional security dynamics shift.

Earlier, reports emerged that the United Kingdom was moving to establish a new multinational naval alliance with northern European partners, aiming to create a force capable of immediate combat operations as concerns grow over Russia’s expanding maritime activity.
