The interception rate of Russian-launched Shahed drone attacks by Ukrainian interceptor drones has doubled over the past four months, according to a statement by Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, cited by Interfax on May 21.

Speaking to journalists, Fedorov emphasized the rapid development of Ukraine’s “small” air defense systems, which rely heavily on specialized FPV and interceptor drones rather than standard anti-aircraft missiles to hunt down incoming threats.

“We continue to build up the 'small' air defense system, thanks to which the interception rate of Shaheds has significantly improved,” Fedorov said, according to Interfax. “The percentage of Shaheds shot down by interceptor drones has increased twofold over the last four months.”

Despite the tactical success of the new interception methods, the sheer volume of aerial attacks remains a challenge. Fedorov noted that the number of Shahed drones Russia launches at Ukraine each month is steadily increasing by 35 percent, stressing the relentless pressure on the country’s multi-layered air defense grid.

This surge in interception rates is driven by highly efficient frontline units utilizing systems like the “Sting” interceptor drones, which operators report achieve a 95 percent success rate even in extreme weather conditions. According to a recent interview with a specialized drone crew, these units have already eliminated nearly 200 Russian targets, including high-speed jet-powered Shahed variants flying at altitudes up to five kilometers.

The interceptors can be launched in just 30 seconds, allowing pilots to intercept the larger, less maneuverable Russian attack drones. To minimize civilian casualties from falling debris, operators prioritize striking the Shahed’s warhead to trigger a mid-air detonation.
