US and Iran to Hold High Level Emergency Talks in Doha Following Ceasefire Violations

High-level emergency meetings between the United States and Iran will be held in Doha on June 30 as both sides attempt to salvage a fragile ceasefire following a series of weekend military strikes, Reuters reported on June 29.
US President Donald Trump announced on social media that Iran had requested the meeting in the Qatari capital.

“Special Envoy Witkoff and Jared Kushner will be flying to Doha for high-level meetings this week, as we continue to discuss the memorandum of understanding,” Leavitt stated, according to Reuters. “As far as we’re concerned, we’re holding up our end of the ceasefire. Violence will be met with violence.”
The sudden diplomatic push follows tit-for-tat weekend strikes that threatened to derail a 14-point memorandum of understanding signed on June 17. The initial accord aimed to conclude four months of active conflict, binding both nations to cease hostilities and reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a maritime chokepoint responsible for a fifth of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas transit, Reuters wrote.
However, the truce quickly deteriorated after an Iranian projectile struck a commercial cargo vessel in the strait on June 25, sparking immediate US counterstrikes. Both Washington and Tehran have since accused each other of breaking the interim ceasefire.

“There were attacks on commercial vessels that the United States of America, directed by the president, responded to, and that will continue to happen, but we hope we don’t see that,” Leavitt said, Reuters reported. “The president obviously wants to see the peace process play out.”
The upcoming talks follow the inclusion of a proposed $300 billion private investment fund linked to the US-Iran peace agreement. The vehicle utilizes corporate capital from global investors to finance Iranian infrastructure projects, though the Trump administration noted that access remains conditional on Iran dismantling its nuclear program.
Under the framework, the signing of the memorandum initiates a 60-day window for administrators and investors to structure these regional projects.
