White House Offers Ukraine Support in Exchange for European Naval Aid in Strait of Hormuz

The White House is prepared to back Europe on Ukraine in exchange for European maritime assistance in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, Politico reported on June 16.
Despite initial anxieties over the war in Ukraine and the Iran war, senior EU diplomats stated that next month’s NATO summit in Ankara, Turkey, may avoid major disruptions.

The development comes amid discussions over a broader geopolitical tradeoff. According to Politico, US President Donald Trump is prepared to increase pressure on Russian leader Vladimir Putin to end the war against Ukraine if European allies help secure a ceasefire framework with Iran, including through maritime operations in the Strait of Hormuz.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz expressed cautious optimism regarding transatlantic relations following a 70-minute joint meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and other world leaders.
During these closed-door discussions, Trump announced that the United States would reimpose sanctions on Russia’s oil sector, stating that “Russia has to make a deal.” Politico noted that this support came with conditions.

Two senior diplomats stated that Trump pressed his G7 counterparts to offer verbal and material backing for his upcoming Iran agreement before Vice President JD Vance arrived in Geneva to finalize the ceasefire. French President Emmanuel Macron indicated that European deployment of mine-clearing vessels remains possible, provided it is formally requested by the involved parties, including the US, Iran, and Oman.
European leaders also worked to keep the US president aligned with Western positions. Politico reported that Macron secured an extended stay from Trump by inviting him to a private dinner at the Palace of Versailles, while Chancellor Merz gifted Trump a custom football jersey embroidered with the number 47.

Simultaneously, President Zelenskyy spoke to religious members of the US delegation by sharing imagery of a Ukrainian Kyiv Pechersk Lavra cathedral targeted by a Russian drone strike, arguing for sustained pressure against Moscow.
The newfound transatlantic optimism builds on concrete actions taken earlier in the summit. Just a day prior, G7 leaders had already reached a formal consensus to escalate economic pressure on Moscow by targeting its lucrative energy sector.
It was reported that the recent US-Iran peace agreement had stabilized global energy markets, giving member states the economic breathing room to aggressively target Russian energy revenues without spiking prices. Reinforcing this united front, the United Kingdom and Canada also rolled out independent sanctions yesterday aimed at crippling the “shadow fleet” of tankers Russia utilizes to bypass international restrictions.
