30-Day Ceasefire Won’t End War, Martial Law to Stay in Place, Ukrainian Official Said

Mykhailo Podolyak, advisor to the Head of Ukraine’s Presidential Office, stated that if a 30-day ceasefire were to take effect, martial law would remain in place, and elections would not be held.

This was reported by Meduza on March 14, citing Podolyak’s statement in an interview with La Repubblica.

“A 30-day ceasefire is not the end of the war. The situation will remain unpredictable. Lifting martial law is impossible in such a short time,” Podolyak stated.

“There will need to be negotiations and verified observers capable of ensuring the separation of forces and preventing ceasefire violations. We must maintain combat readiness until the situation is fully resolved.”

When asked about the possibility of holding elections during this period, Podolyak ruled it out. He explained that in an unstable situation, it would be impossible to ensure safe polling stations or conduct an electoral campaign properly.

On March 11, Ukraine agreed to a US-proposed 30-day temporary ceasefire, which could be extended if Russia also commits to and implements the terms. Meanwhile, the United States lifted its pause on intelligence sharing and resumed security assistance to Ukraine.

On March 13, Ukrainian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Heorhii Tykhyi stated that he was very positive about the meeting in Jeddah that went on between the Ukrainian and US delegations.

Tykhyi reported that Ukraine came to Jeddah with three proposals, which were: achieving a ceasefire in the air, a naval ceasefire in the Black Sea, and the exchange of prisoners of war.
