Czech parliamentary speaker and leader of the Freedom and Direct Democracy party, Tomio Okamura, stated that his party would continue to push for the shutdown of all forms of support for Ukraine, including assistance to refugees, Ukrinform correspondent reported on January 14.

He also said his party agreed to the continuation of the ammunition initiative for Ukraine only as a “difficult compromise,” on the condition that state funding for it ends and that no Czech troops are deployed to Ukraine.

Speaking to journalists during a break in the lower house session, Okamura stated that his party would continue pushing to shut down the ammunition initiative altogether. He added that if Freedom and Direct Democracy had won the elections, the Czech Republic would not have participated in the initiative at all.

“We will not give any money from the Czech budget under humanitarian initiatives. And we have agreed that no Czech soldiers will be in Ukraine,” Okamura said, while vowing to keep pressuring the government to halt arms deliveries, their financing, and “any financial support to Ukrainians.”

Okamura also linked his party’s stance to plans for a tougher law on the residence of foreigners in the Czech Republic, including Ukrainians. His comments came as Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš met with SPD lawmakers ahead of a crucial confidence vote, seeking to secure backing from all coalition partners to keep the government in power.

Previously, opposition parties in Czechia were seeking to bring a vote in the lower house of parliament on the removal of Tomio Okamura following an anti-Ukraine speech he delivered on New Year’s Eve.

According to Czech news outlet České Noviny, opposition lawmakers planned to begin collecting signatures next week to formally submit a motion calling for debate on Okamura’s dismissal. The initiative was confirmed by Zdeněk Hřib, leader of the Pirate Party.
