The European Commission is set to unveil its “Readiness 2030” strategy, a blueprint for strengthening European defense by 2030, which will be discussed at an informal European Council summit in Copenhagen on October 1, Radio Svoboda reported on September 30.

The strategy outlines key projects, goals, and steps to enhance the EU’s defense capabilities, focusing on drone systems, air defense, and rapid technological innovation.

The EU plans to implement a “drone wall” along its eastern flank, an integrated system designed to combat drone threats and ensure protection against potential aerial incursions. This initiative, which draws on Ukraine’s experience, will focus on detection, tracking, and neutralization.

Alongside the drone wall, a “eastern flank guard” will enhance defense against a broad spectrum of threats, complementing NATO operations in the region, Radio Svoboda writes.

The Commission also stresses the need for coordinated investments in pan-European defense projects, such as air and space defense shields, and maritime security in the Baltic and Black Seas. A financial roadmap will mobilize up to $938 billion, with new funding mechanisms like the SAFE program , supporting defense projects across EU member states.

The Commission’s document outlines the importance of innovation, urging Europe to enhance its industrial capabilities and scale up military production. Ukraine will play a critical role in this process, contributing to Europe’s defense readiness through its industrial potential and combat experience, according to Radio Svoboda.

Leaders will review these plans at the summit, aiming to finalize the roadmap and set clear goals to ensure Europe’s defense preparedness by 2030.

Previously, it was reported that Ukraine is ready to join the EU’s “drone wall” project, Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal confirmed after a meeting with EU defense ministers.
