The European Commission has transferred a thermal power plant from Lithuania to Ukraine, a move expected to supply electricity to roughly one million people across the country, according to Ukraine’s Ministry of Energy on December 22.

The Ministry said the transfer required a complex operation lasting 11 months, during which 149 shipments of equipment with a combined weight of 2,399 tons were delivered, including 40 oversized consignments such as exceptionally heavy transformers and stators weighing around 172 tons each.

The ministry noted that assistance from Poland’s Government Agency for Strategic Reserves was crucial in facilitating the complicated transportation of the large and heavy components.

The delivered equipment enabled emergency repair work in several Ukrainian regions where energy infrastructure had been badly damaged by Russian strikes.

“We are extremely grateful to our partners in Lithuania, Poland, and the entire European community who helped deliver critically needed equipment. It made it possible to restore vital energy capacities and strengthen the resilience of the energy system,” said Acting Minister of Energy of Ukraine Artem Nekrasov.

European Commissioner for Preparedness, Crisis Management, and Equality Hadja Lahbib added the transfer of the power plant would help ensure electricity and heating for one million people enduring a fourth winter amid Russia’s war of aggression.

According to the Ministry of Energy, the operation forms part of the EU’s broader response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine since February 2022 and was coordinated through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.

Overall EU support for Ukraine’s energy sector has already assisted millions, including through the delivery of 9,500 generators and 7,200 transformers. The European Commission has allocated more than $1.31 billion for humanitarian assistance programs in Ukraine and has delivered over 160,000 tons of aid.

Earlier, Ukraine secured an additional $2.5 billion in direct budget support from the European Union through the Ukraine Facility program.
