Germany has financed the production of a large batch of long-range weapons for Ukraine, with the first systems expected to be delivered by the end of July. The announcement was made by Major General Christian Freuding, Head of the Planning Staff at the German Ministry of Defense and coordinator of Berlin’s military assistance to Ukraine.

In an interview with ZDF heute journal, Freuding stated that the weapons will significantly strengthen Ukraine’s air defense and strike capabilities in the coming weeks and months. He emphasized the need for systems capable of reaching deep into Russian territory to target command centers, airfields, aircraft, and logistics infrastructure.

According to Freuding, Germany initiated and funded the program in late May. A contract between Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense and domestic defense manufacturers was signed shortly thereafter. The first batch of these weapons is scheduled to arrive by the end of July, with deliveries expected to continue in the following months.

Freuding confirmed that the total number of systems will reach a “high three-digit figure.” Although he did not specify the exact type of weapon, his references to striking deep behind enemy lines align with earlier discussions in Germany about potentially supplying Ukraine with Taurus long-range missiles.

The German general noted that the battlefield situation remains tense. Russian forces have maintained tactical initiative on several fronts for weeks, while Ukraine continues to face intensified aerial attacks on major cities. He added that the newly funded missile systems are intended to counter this pressure by enhancing Ukraine’s ability to strike targets far beyond the front line.

Freuding also acknowledged ongoing Ukrainian efforts to localize the production of spare parts for Western artillery systems and to improve the performance of domestically produced drones. Germany, he said, will continue supporting such initiatives alongside direct arms funding.

Earlier, on July 2, Germany signed its first contract to fund the production of over 500 long-range strike systems for Ukraine, including AN-196 combat drones with a range of up to 1,200 kilometers. According to the German Ministry of Defense, the weapons will be produced in Ukraine to enable faster delivery and integration into existing operational frameworks.
