Germany Says Russia Is Helping Iran Identify Strike Targets to Shift Focus From Ukraine

Russia is assisting Iran in identifying potential targets for strikes, a move Berlin says is part of a broader effort by the Kremlin to divert Western attention away from Ukraine, according to The Guardian on March 27.

Speaking at a G7 meeting in France, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said Moscow is providing Tehran with intelligence that could be used to plan attacks. According to The Guardian, Wadephul framed the cooperation as a strategic attempt by Russian leader Vladimir Putin to influence the wider geopolitical agenda.

“Putin cynically hopes that the escalation in the Middle East will divert our attention from his crimes in Ukraine,” Wadephul said. “This calculation must not succeed.”
He added that Germany sees a direct connection between developments in the Middle East and Russia’s ongoing war against Ukraine. “We see very clearly how closely the two conflicts are intertwined. Russia is evidently supporting Iran with information about potential targets,” Wadephul said, according to The Guardian.
The German minister also confirmed that he had discussed the situation with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. During the conversation, Berlin outlined its readiness to contribute to stabilizing the Strait of Hormuz after active hostilities in the region subside.

While no technical details were disclosed about the nature of the intelligence support, Wadephul’s remarks suggest a level of coordination that goes beyond political alignment, potentially involving operational-level information sharing.
Earlier, Russia began supplying Iran with attack drones—likely “Geran-2” systems, its domestically produced version of the Iranian Shahed-136—marking a reversal in roles between the two countries.
The report, citing Western intelligence sources, indicates that the transfers were accompanied by satellite imagery and targeting support, as well as technical upgrades that have made the Russian variants more advanced than the original Iranian designs.
