Hungary's government offered its assistance to Iran immediately after a September 2024 operation against Hezbollah militants, which involved the use of bomb-laden pagers.

This offer was documented in a copy of a government transcript from a phone conversation on September 30, 2024, which was obtained and reviewed by The Washington Post on April 8, citing Western intelligence sources.

The Hungarian authorities expressed their readiness to provide intelligence information and the results of an internal investigation to Iran, a key sponsor of the Lebanese Hezbollah group.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó emphasized that there was no direct involvement of Budapest in the production of these devices. He reassured Iranian officials that Hungary's national intelligence agencies had already established contact with Iranian security bodies to exchange documents and investigation results related to the incident.

“Our secret service has already contacted your services and we will share all the information we have gathered during the investigation,” Hungarian Foreign Minister told his Iranian counterpart, Abbas Araghchi.

Szijjártó confirmed Hungary's intention to hand over all relevant documents concerning the incident to Tehran, offering additional support should further requests or needs for direct ministerial contacts arise between the two countries.

He maintained that the explosive devices never passed through Hungarian territory and that no local companies were involved in their production.

“These pagers are not produced in Hungary, they have never been to Hungary and no Hungarian company has never been related with these pagers physically. So we don’t have anything to do with it!” Szijjártó said.

This offer of cooperation with Iran contrasts with Hungary's public foreign policy, particularly its consistent support of Israel on the international stage. Hungary has frequently voiced its support for Tel Aviv in the UN Security Council and previously rejected the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court during Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's visit.

At the same time, US President Donald Trump has warned that the United States will impose heavy tariffs on any country that supplies weapons to Iran, signaling a tough approach to military cooperation with Tehran.

In a statement posted on his social media platform Truth Social on April 8, Trump announced that the US would apply punitive trade measures to these countries, with no exceptions. The move marks a continuation of his administration’s hardline stance toward Iran and its allies.
