Belarus is preparing to host the Russian “Oreshnik” missile system before the end of 2025, with designated deployment sites already selected, according to Belarusian State Secretary of the Security Council Alexander Volfovich. The announcement was made in Belarusian media on May 28.

Volfovich noted that the issue of deploying the missile system would shift “into a practical phase” later this year.

“The work is ongoing. Statements by some Ukrainian officials and other leaders—that this is a bluff, that nothing is happening—let them comfort themselves with that hope,” Volfovich said.

He also expressed confidence in the missile system’s strategic value, stating that the “Oreshnik” would be capable of inflicting “unacceptable damage” on a potential adversary in the event of aggression against Belarus. “But we would prefer it never comes to that,” he added.

The Oreshnik, a ballistic missile variant of Russia’s RS-26, first gained prominence on November 21, 2024, when it was launched by Russia toward the city of Dnipro in east of Ukraine.

The missile, weighing 40 tons and equipped with six independent reentry vehicles, was initially mistaken for a nuclear-capable intercontinental ballistic missile, heightening concerns about its destructive capacity.

The incident marked a continuation of Russia’s pattern of threats and military signaling. Following the initial Oreshnik strike, Putin issued a warning of potential further launches, explicitly naming “decision-making centers” in Kyiv as possible targets.

Earlier, Chief of Ukraine’s Foreign Intelligence Service, Oleh Ivashchenko, stated that while platforms such as aircraft and Iskander missile systems are present, there are no nuclear warheads on Belarusian territory.
