Man Confesses to Killing Ex-Ukrainian Parliament Speaker After Contact With Russian Agents

During initial interrogations, the suspect in the murder of former Ukrainian parliament speaker Andrii Parubiy confessed to the crime and revealed details of his contacts with Russian agents, Radio Svoboda reported on September 1, citing law enforcement sources.
According to investigators, the 52-year-old Lviv resident claimed he first reached out to Russians while searching for information about his son, a Ukrainian serviceman who went missing near Bakhmut in 2023.
After learning from his son’s comrades that he had disappeared, the suspect began monitoring Russian social media. He later established contact with unidentified Russian operatives, who allegedly told him that his son had been killed.

Law enforcement sources say the suspect recounted how these contacts attempted to justify Russia’s war against Ukraine and instead blamed Ukrainian officials for its outbreak. He also admitted to telling them that he lived in Lviv and had “repeatedly” seen Andrii Parubiy.
Investigators believe that during continued communication with Russian agents, the suspect began preparing for the murder. He allegedly obtained a firearm, purchased equipment including a bicycle and helmet, and even acquired a car with forged documents to track Parubiy’s movements.
Earlier, it was reported that Andrii Parubiy was shot dead in Lviv on Saturday, August 30, in what authorities described as a targeted attack. The shooting occurred shortly after midday in the city’s Frankivsk district, where police arriving at the scene found Parubiy with multiple fatal gunshot wounds.
