Meloni Calls Putin’s Three-Day Ceasefire “Insufficient,” Backing Zelenskyy’s Call for Unconditional Peace

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that the three-day ceasefire announced by Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin is insufficient, emphasizing the need for a just and lasting peace.
In an interview with Corriere della Sera published on April 29, Meloni explained that Italy supports the efforts of US President Donald Trump and expressed her approval of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s commitment to an unconditional ceasefire, demonstrating Ukraine’s desire for peace.
“Now, Russia must show the same willingness,” Meloni said. “The three-day ceasefire declared by Putin for the anniversary of Victory Day in World War II is something else entirely and clearly insufficient. Peace must be both just and lasting.”

Meloni emphasized that this primarily means reliable security guarantees.
“Italy has long presented its proposal: a necessary solution inspired by Article 5 of the Washington Treaty is needed, even beyond the scope of the NATO agreement,” she added.
On April 28, Putin announced a ceasefire in Ukraine, from midnight on May 8 until midnight on May 11, to mark the 80th anniversary of Victory Day.
During the same day, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Andrii Sybiha, responded to the Kremlin’s announcement by stating that “If Russia truly wants peace, it must cease fire immediately. Why wait until May 8th?”
