One Year of Ukraine’s “Drone Line”: Drone Units Eliminate Every Third Russian on the Front

Ukraine marked one year of its “Drone Line” initiative, saying $880 million in support has helped drone units account for heavy Russian losses, according to Ukraine’s Defense Ministry on March 4.
The ministry outlined that the program began in spring 2025 at the initiative of Ukraine’s president.
It aims to strengthen the use of unmanned systems across the Defense Forces. It focuses on scaling effective combat practices and building a lasting technology advantage.

The ministry said “Drone Line” is not a single unit or a one-time equipment delivery effort. It described it as a unified system for drone use along the line of contact.
It added that the project has become one of the largest foreign direct financing mechanisms for Ukraine’s drone industry.

The ministry said “Drone Line” units account for nearly one in four Russian servicemembers put out of action at the front.
It added that the share rose to one in three in January and February. It also said the Unmanned Systems Forces, which include these units, put about 30,000 Russian troops out of action over the winter.

Earlier, it was reported that Ukraine and the Netherlands agreed to expand Ukraine’s “Drone Line” initiative by formalizing drone regiments across military corps to scale coordinated frontline drone operations.
The effort is meant to institutionalize these units within the force structure, rather than relying on ad hoc formations, to sustain high-tempo drone warfare.
The expansion is framed around a stated goal of inflicting up to 50,000 Russian troop losses per month through intensified drone-enabled strikes and battlefield pressure.
