Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has warned that Russia could launch an attack on a NATO member within months, raising concerns about the alliance’s readiness to respond and the reliability of US security guarantees, Tusk said in an interview with the Financial Times on April 24.

Tusk stated that the threat should be viewed in the short term rather than as a distant possibility. “This is something really serious. I’m talking about short-term perspectives, rather months than years,” he said, referring to the potential for a Russian strike against the alliance.

The Prime Minister also questioned whether NATO—and particularly the United States—would respond decisively in such a scenario, emphasizing the importance of translating formal commitments into real-world action.

“For the whole eastern flank, my neighbours . . . the question is if NATO is still an organisation ready, politically and also logistically, to react, for example against Russia if they try to attack,” Tusk said.

According to the FT, he stressed that his remarks were not meant to undermine NATO’s Article 5 mutual defense clause, but rather to highlight the need for practical preparedness. “I want to believe that [Article 5] is still valid, but sometimes, of course, I have some problems,” he said. “What we need today is also practical context.”

Tusk pointed to an incident last year in which roughly 20 Russian drones entered Polish airspace, arguing that some allies were slow to recognize the seriousness of the situation.

“It wasn’t easy for me to convince our partners in NATO that it wasn’t a random incident, it was a well-planned and prepared provocation against Poland,” he said. “For some of our colleagues, it was much easier to pretend that nothing happened.”

Tusk urged European countries to strengthen their own defense cooperation, calling for the European Union to evolve into a more capable security actor.

“What you need if you want to have, not only on paper, a real alliance, is true tools and real power when it comes to defence instruments,” he said.

Earlier, reports emerged that France and Poland were preparing to conduct joint military exercises on NATO’s eastern flank. The maneuvers will take place over the Baltic Sea and northern Poland.

These drills will simulate the use of French nuclear weapons against targets in Russia and Belarus, according to Wirtualna Polska. Key sites near Saint Petersburg are among the simulated targets.
