Russia Is Rolling Out an AI Command System Called “Svod.” Here’s What We Know

Russia is preparing to deploy a new AI-enabled battlefield management system, known as Svod, aimed at addressing persistent command-and-control problems among front-line units, according to an analysis published by Forbes on January 25.
Forbes notes that the system is intended to compensate for long-standing weaknesses in Russia’s military structure, including rigid top-down command, slow decision-making, and a shortage of experienced junior officers after rapid troop expansion.

The Svod system is designed as a digital decision-support tool for tactical-level commanders. According to information released by Russia’s Defense Ministry and cited by Forbes, it aggregates data from satellites, aerial reconnaissance, intelligence reports, and open sources into a single operational picture.
Using automated analysis and AI-driven modeling, the system is meant to help Russian officers assess situations faster and choose courses of action during combat.

Russia isn’t the only country integrating AI systems into battlefield management, however. Britain was set to deploy a new multi-layered underwater surveillance and anti-submarine warfare network known as Atlantic Bastion. The initiative links autonomous surface and subsurface vessels, AI-enabled sensor grids, and existing naval and air platforms.
Ukrainian defense company DevDroid, on the other hand, has integrated an AI-powered optical target detection and identification system into its ground robotic platforms.
Operational testing of the Russia’s Svod system was reportedly completed in December 2025, with initial deployment expected in April 2026. Russian media-linked analysts say the first units to receive Svod will be formations fighting in the Pokrovsk direction, one of Moscow’s main offensive axes, which Russia has long tried and failed to take.
The Forbes also cautions that Svod’s effectiveness will depend heavily on data quality and battlefield conditions. Electronic warfare, disrupted communications, and Ukraine’s adaptive tactics could limit the system’s usefulness. Still, its introduction signals another attempt by Russia to use digital tools to mitigate operational shortcomings rather than reform command doctrine.
Previously, it was reported that Russia’s pro-Kremlin religious establishment has called for the creation of a “Orthodox” artificial intelligence rooted in what it describes as traditional spiritual values, arguing that reliance on Western AI systems poses ideological risks.
